INFORMATION FOR INTERNATIONAL AGENCIES AND COMPANIES
Local Procurement
Peace Dividend Trust encourages international actors on the ground in a recovering or developing country to buy locally. Many of the products and services the international community imports can actually be procured locally at a much lower cost. Furthermore, buying locally ensures that operational spending directly supports the private sector development and local entrepreneurship that is so essential in building a strong and vibrant economy.
International actors in all sectors are recognizing the mutual benefits of buying and hiring locally, embracing local procurement initiatives such as the 'Afghan First' initiative in Afghanistan.
Marketplace Projects
PDT understands that identifying and working with local businesses is not always an easy task. The Marketplace projects in Afghanistan, Timor-Leste and Haiti are designed specifically to facilitate the process of switching to local suppliers.
PDT does all the legwork of finding qualified local businesses that can fill the needs of the international community, and makes sure that all collaborating businesses are prepared to meet international standards. PDT's Business Development Service provides individualized assistance and consulting to international agencies and companies to find local solutions to procurement needs.
PDT also encourages international agencies to reach local businesses through our Tender Distribution Service (TDS) and Business Directory. Currently, these services are fully operational in Afghanistan and Timor-Leste and are in the process of being implemented in Haiti as well.
The Tender Distribution Service collects international tenders to create a central point where local businesses can come to pick up the latest tenders and receive individual assistance in responding to them.
The Business Directories are online directories listing legally registered Afghan and Timor-Leste companies, each of which has been personally verified by PDT's staff. The Afghan database currently contains over 3,500 businesses and the Timor-Leste database contains more than 2,000 and is growing quickly.

Aid Effectiveness and Economic Impact
Peace Dividend Trust has been a leader in assessing the local economic impact of international activities and foreign aid. PDT works with the UN to improve the economic impact of peacekeeping missions and is currently in Sierra Leone to evaluate the economic footprint of the international community. PDT is also working with the Afghan Ministry of Finance to assess the real impact of official development assistance, in accordance with the Afghanistan Compact.
